Sustainability is essential in ensuring that present needs are met without compromising the ability of future generations to thrive. In today’s rapidly changing world marked by environmental challenges, resource constraints, and social inequalities, higher education institutions play a vital role in shaping responsible, informed, and future-ready citizens.

At the School of Distance Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Sustainability@SDE reflects our commitment to embedding sustainable values into our academic ecosystem. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we aim to cultivate awareness, responsibility, and action among our students, staff, and wider community.

Why Sustainability Matters

Sustainability is not only about protecting the environment, it also encompasses social well-being and economic resilience. As an open and distance learning institution, SDE is uniquely positioned to:

Our Role & Aspirations

Sustainability@SDE supports and aligns with the broader sustainability agenda of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). We aspire to contribute through:

  • Sustainable Practices
    Promoting green office initiatives such as reducing waste, encouraging recycling, and practising responsible resource management in our daily operations
  • Community Engagement
    Organising programmes and activities that raise sustainability awareness and encourage collective action among staff, students, and the wider community

Through these efforts, SDE aims to complement and strengthen USM’s sustainability initiatives while fostering a culture of sustainability within our own community.
